Woodland Planting Day 14th December 2011
Mepal community comes together to sow seeds for the future:-
Mepal residents, young and old, dug deep this week to create a new area of woodland for the benefit of the local community.
Pupils from Mepal & Witcham Primary School, members of Mepal Youth Club and other local volunteers took up their spades to plant hundreds of native trees including Oak, Field Maple, Hazel and Wild Cherry. The trees will create a new woodland area on scrub land between the village and the busy A142. Twenty five Elm trees, donated by “Butterfly Conservation” in order to attract a white moth which is native to the area, were also planted. The Parish Council, promoters of the project, hope it will also go some way to protecting the nearby estate from traffic noise.
The event was held as part of the Planting Parishes project, a joint initiative between East Cambridgeshire District Council and the Woodland Trust. Set up to create woodland areas for community use and to reduce carbon emissions, the initiative is helping to transform pockets of land around East Cambridgeshire.
The event was supported by Woodford Waste Management Services Ltd through a £5,000 grant from the company's “Woodford Community and Environmental Fund.”
Mr Mark Newstead, Chairman of the Project Working Party said “the new woodland is a wonderful addition to our village and will be much enjoyed by current and future villagers. We are hugley grateful to the Parish Council and all the organisations and individuals involved in realising this fantastic project for Mepal.”
